Installing Blinds in Shallow Windows

In this blog entry, the professional Los Angeles blinds installation service team here at Los Angeles Shades and Blinds will describe the process of measuring window depth for blind installation, and what to do if you want to install blinds in shallow windows.

How can I determine if my windows are deep enough to install blinds?

Depth is important for blind and shade installation. Depth describes how much space is inside the window opening from front to back in the area where the blind will be installed. Measure window depth by using a steel tape measure. Extend the tape measure into the window as far as possible onto the top of the window where the bracket will be installed. Look for cranks or handles on the window opening – if there is one, measure from this obstruction to the very edge of the window frame. If you have beveled windows, measure the largest and flattest part of the beveling.

  • When you determine your window’s depth, check it against the specific depth requirements for the blinds you want to install – which are normally located under the measuring information section on the blinds website product page. You will want to look for a label called “minimum inside mount depth requirements’ ‘ – a measurement that describes the smallest space that the bracket and installation hardware require for safe and study installation. Compare this number to the measurement to ensure there’s enough surface for the bracket installation.
  • In order to make sure the headrail doesn’t protrude from the window, check the “fully recessed minimum inside mount depth” number – a description of the amount required for blind headrails, cassettes, and valances to stay flush in the window opening.

How can I mount blinds in shallow windows?

If your windows do not have enough depth for the blinds you like, consider opting for outside mounted blinds. Many blinds can be created with side returns to cover any exposed brackets or headrails where the unit might protrude from windows.
