UV radiation from the solar rays can fade and damage rugs and carpets – which is why it’s so essential to install solar shades in rooms with rugs that get a ton of sunshine. In this blog entry, the solar shade and blind installation experts here at Los Angeles Shades and Blinds will detail how without solar blinds, your rugs can get damaged.
Ultraviolet light is the main cause of carpet and rug fading. Other elements of the light spectrum don’t cause this kind of damage. Ultraviolet rays can also cause wool fibers to wear more quickly. In order to avoid this damage, first place your rug in an area where it won’t be exposed to huge amounts of direct sunlight.
If your rug will experience direct sunlight, draw shades or curtains when you’re not home. You can also consider installing low emission glass in your windows. This glass filters out UV light from entering your home, while still allowing light to enter your property. Low E glass can even keep your energy costs down – making homes cooler in the Summer and warmer in the Winter.
You can even opt to install Low E filters for your existing windows. These transparent filters come in clear or semi-opaque shading types, and are directly applied to the surface of your existing windows. They don’t work quite as well as Low E glass, but still do great at reducing UV rays from entering your property.
We don’t recommend adding UV blocking chemicals to your rug fibers, as they haven’t demonstrated significant ability to block sun fading and damage, and can even attract dirt, causing your rugs or carpets to look much dirtier, much faster.
