Single Cellular Shades VS. Double Cellular Shades

In this blog entry, the professional Los Angeles cellular shades installation team here at LA Shades and Blinds will detail the essential differences between single cellular shades and double cellular shades.

Single Cellular Shades

Standard window shades are made of a single piece of fabric, and single cellular shades are made of a single layer of cellular fabric that’s organized in a shape that “pops out” – which is why they are often also called honeycomb shades. You can tell if a shade has a single cellular layer if when you’re looking at the shade when it sits in the window it looks pleated, but if you look at the area of the shade that is fit against the window shade you see honeycomb shaped cells. The honeycomb design helps single cellular shades keep out much more heat, cold, light, and ultraviolet rays than standard shades can.

Double Cellular Shades

Similar dot single cellular shades, double cellular shades make your property far more energy efficient. Oube cellular shades have cellular shapes and are arranged in two layers of cellular fabric, with one layer being closer to the room and one layer being closer to the window. Double cellular shades have much smaller pleats than are usually found in single cellular shades. Double cellular shades provide the same benefits of single cellular shades, but block out much higher levels of noise, temperature, and UV rays than their single-cell competition.

Choosing Between Single Cellular Shades and Double Cellular Shades

Single cellular shades are usually more sleek and attractive, and are a good choice for those not as concerned about temperature control and more focused on aesthetics. If you live or work in an area with strong temperatures and weather or a ton of noise, double cellular shades are a better bet, as their second layer of cells can block more light and regulate temperature better than single cellular shades (the cells will stop hot or cold air from passing through the window). A popular approach that we recommend is to protect the sides of your property that get the most sunlight with double cellular shades and the sides that get less sunlight with single cellular shades. Regardless of your choice, cellular shades of all kinds are a fantastic option for anybody looking for a window treatment solution that provides light, privacy, and noise control.
