Choosing Roman Shades for your Home

Roman shades are incredibly popular window treatments, and make a perfect match for the windows of many homes (and even businesses!) There’s many ways that roman shades can be considered a perfect match for your property’s layout, construction, and aesthetic – and there are many reasons people purchase roman shades to compliment and accentuate the feeling of their living spaces! Here’s a guide from the roman shade installation experts here at LA Shades and Blinds as to the top reasons most people opt for roman shades on their windows.

Common Reasons to Install Roman Shades

  1. Windows that aren’t fit with ‘stack backs’ – drapery panels housed on either side of a window – are perfect matches for space-saving, vertically oriented roman shades.
  2. If your windows are strange sizes or hard to reach, roman shades are incredibly convenient and can even be remote-controlled.
  3. Roman shades are perfect for those who are looking for a minimal, elegant, and stream-lined aesthetic.
  4. Windows in small rooms are perfect matches for roman shades, as they take up much less space than typical drapery.
  5. Homes with small children or pets that often rub on drapery are perfect settings for durable and stain resistant roman shades.

Choosing your Roman Shades

You will need to choose the style and material of your roman shades – popular options include woven wood, cotton, or linen. Organic materials tend to provide a more elegant feeling, and are surprisingly durable.

Then, you will need to decide which layout the shades will be positioned in when the roman shades are drawn down.

Options for roman shade layout include:

  • Plain, horizontal folds
  • Swags – A curved, almost smile shaped drape
  • Soft Folds – Plain folds with more of a sense of gentle flow.
  • Relaxed (European) –  A slight curve at the bottom of the shade itself
  • Ties
  • Flat Folds – ideal for space saving.

Customizing and Installing Roman Shades

You can customize your roman shades with details and accents including contrast piping and inset borders. Then, decide if you want your roman shades to have liners – there’s many liners available, including blackout liners and energy-efficient thermal liners. Even brightly colored or white shades can easily be fit with blackout liners!

A specific type of mount will be determined to work best with your window. Either the roman shades will be mounted within the window frame (known as ‘ inside mount’,) or on the wall that the window is positioned in (known as ‘outside mount’.) Inside mounts are usually more elegant, however they require a certain degree of depth that can accommodate the mounting hardware.

Roman blinds have custom lifting options, and customers can choose from corded shades (as well as what side of the shades the cord falls on,) and cordless shades that can be lifted – or even synced up to a remote control or smartphone!
